The Mykal D. Parker Foundation is committed to fostering and furthering the arts and music education through funding promising students' needs for musical instruments, instruction, production, and enrichment through travel and cultural exploration.
Founded in November 2023, the organization honors the life and legacy of Greenville, North Carolina native, Mykal David Parker. Mykal's sudden transition from time into eternity at the age of 18 following an automobile accident left an immense earthly void that can only be filled with the perpetuation of his greatest passions -- music and cultural harmony.
Mykal seemed drawn to music since birth and learned to play the piano and other instruments by ear. He was a chorus member at Eastern Elementary School. At CM Eppes Middle School he was a member of Bulldog Buzz, orchestra, and band. His instruments were clarinet, cello, and bass. Despite being diagnosed with asthma as a child, he was determined to learn to play the trumpet, which he did by taking private lessons with Dan Jones through the Music Academy of Eastern Carolina during the summer between middle school and high school.
In high school, he was a proud member of the JH Rose Marching Rampants as well as the concert band and jazz band, where he added more instruments (including French Horn) to his collection. Mykal was proud of the many all-county and all-district awards he and his fellow bandmates won, but most of all, he cherished the deep and diverse friendships he developed along the way.
As important to Mykal as music was his commitment to friends and family, which is why, despite other scholarship offers, he literally chose the college down the street, East Carolina University, where he was an Access Scholarship recipient.
Mykal was a grateful 2022 recipient of the Access Scholarship at East Carolina University. He completed his freshman year proud of his academic accomplishments and looked forward to returning. Even though his time at ECU was cut short, his family and foundation continues to support ECU students through donations to the Access Scholars program.
In May 2024, the Mykal D. Parker Foundation awards the first of its annual scholarships for local graduating seniors actively involved in music programs and pursuits. In June 2024, another scholarship was awarded to support summer music lessons for a local middle school student.
